Experiencing the Richness of Life Published: Sunday, February 9, 2003 By: Dr. Manuel Ángel Morales

There is a time of every human being when a sense of gratitude for blessings in his/her life should overflow into the desire to reach out and help others. It is about giving a lit bit of inspiration and love showing that we care and offering encouragement to those who need a reminder of life’s basic truths, plus the stimulation of sharing a few good ideas about how to deal with whatever challenges face them.

All human beings face tough times, times when we may feel as though events and circumstances have more control over our lives than we do. Hence, we may feel disappointed or discouraged, and the challenges of our lives can be seen as so titanic that we can also be prompt to forget about the frustration of people around us.

Maturity is about increasing our capacity for helping others, and in doing so helping ourselves, to thrive into new human frontiers.

We are not alone. We belong and part of our quality of life, part of our true success, is learning to appreciate and consider the emotional needs of our neighbors, friends, associates and family members.

I am a product of the complex 1960’s generation so I am still an idealist and sing with the Young Bloods: Come on people smite your brother, everybody get together and try to love one another right now. Is it much to ask? I don’t think so. Forty years later I wake up every morning at 4:00 a.m. and pray for the society, family members, friends, people and those in profound need.

The promise is that if we care about our neighbors this will give us a greater sense of gratitude and actualization for our own lives and even for our own struggles. Like many others before me, and others sharing with me, as I get older, I have come to realize that one of the more important ways to experience the richness of live is to live in a mental state of gratitude. This is the psychology of appreciating what you have and what you can give. The best way to ensure your happiness is to help others in experiencing their own.

Developing an attitude of appreciation requires developing an appreciative heart and mindset for tracking and fanning. An appreciative heart is one that acknowledges that your beliefs, behaviors and interactions have an impact on the world you inhabit and you get more of whatever you pay attention to. The psychology of appreciation is about attending and noticing those things that call the best in us as people, the kinds of things most of us value, hope for and want in our lives.

Tracking involves seeing what you want more of as already there in the presence of other human beings.

Fanning is about helping to turn a little flame of positive potential of others into a roaring fire.

Genuine praise and blessing are a potent kind of psychological food that strengthens our self. That in turn helps to strengthen and increase our ability and motivation to do more for helping others. With a simple act of kindness we realized that hope is eternal, and that true human beings do care.
