Tennis: Carpe Momentum Servire Published: Sunday, April 28, 2002 By: Guillermo Morales Rubert

The game of business is very much like the game of tennis. Those who fail to master the basics of serving well, usually lose. Be it furniture, clothes, healthcare, industries today are marketing nothing more than commodities - no more, no less. What will make the difference in the long run is the care, feeding and service to the customers.

Thus, I am pleased to inform the public in general of a historic and one of a kind tennis event for Puerto Rico. The event has been scheduled for the weekend of Saturday, June 1st., 2002. The Puerto Rican Tennis Champion, Luis Haddock will face Boris “The Machine” Becker, who was the youngest player ever to win the Wimbledon Championship and was the former number one player in the world. This will be the first time in history that Boris Becker visits the island and plays with a Puerto Rican on Puerto Rican soil. This will be a very interesting match because these fellows are both masters of the basics of serving. Hence the public as the customer in this event will be surely delighted.

Activities of this high caliber provide the goals for high performance and give unique opportunities for our athletes to measure-up their skills with world class competition – a dream come true for any national federation. This magnificent event should draw the support from all sectors of the Puerto Rican community.

After the exhibition, the musical performances, DJ Ivan Robles, the best DJ in the island, from La Mega Station 106.9 FM, will host special musical performances. In additions to all these elaborate happenings there will be a gala/auction celebration for sponsors and VIP’s. The proceeds of the auction will benefit a predetermined charity. The confirmed sponsors are the following: Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Veredas Development, Tres Monjitas, P B & Associates, Banco Popular, and GMR Enterprises.

I am sure that special events of this kind will highly demonstrate that athletic performance in a world class sport is not only the result of action during the competition itself. The performance is built over a long training period. High level performance in the tennis sport demands that both physiological and psychological components are combined (body, mind and spirit), to form a dream execution unit. The conditioning physical factors like strength, endurance with aerobic and anaerobic capacities, power and flexibility are now well known and will be displayed by these two champions. I am also pretty sure that these two elite athletes will provide evidence of how human beings can make their body, mind and spirit partners.

The PRTA (Puerto Rico Tennis Association) is determining the site for this mega event. You can keep in touch with us at (787)510-0884. Special thanks goes out to Alberto De La Cruz, President of Coca Cola Puerto Rico. Without his leadership and vision we could not have this event. We cordially invite you and your company to sponsor this enriching athletic activity.

And by the way, Carpe Momentum Servire is a Latin expression meaning to always seize the moment to serve. The point is that like in tennis you have to take a cue from the customer and be creative, off-the-wall, out of the box in order to provide things that can build a special relationship and separate us from the competition. These extra things you can do to win do not come from a manual, they come from the heart. Come to this event and you will see two great athletes playing with their heart.
