QBS: An Organization Built to Last Published: Sunday, October 8, 2006 By: Ramón L. Rivera

According to the organizational sciences, organizations are artificial systems created by humans to address complex tasks, which are not necessarily condemned to growing, aging and dying. Organizations can be renewed and strengthened continuously as to remain young, fast and flexible. In doing so, executive leaders must create the conditions necessary to fundamentally orient and affect people’s behavior so that it supports the strategic changes required to cope with a dynamic and challenging environment.

As the business landscape grows ever more uncertain and therefore, the task of leading successful organizations turns highly complex, organizations are more in need of robust executive teams that can shape a wide repertoire of responses to environmental and market needs and demands.

During the past sixteen (16) years, our team of researches and professionals has been working tenaciously to develop an instrument that can truly help client organizations transition through major and delicate processes of change. I have been fortunate of having been at the right moment in history to meet and join a small group of visionaries and risk takers that were willing to interrupt careers to bet on a promise of creating something unique.

That was the origin of Quality for Business Success Inc., a project that initiated and developed in time with the ingredients for lasting generations. Since the beginning, our dream was to create a multidisciplinary faculty that could blend, as pieces of art, an academic and research orientation with the capabilities as brokers and practitioners to help clients use new knowledge for solving complex organizational problems.

That is much easier said than done. It has taken creative thinking, hard work and a special type of people with the maturity for engaging in a two-shift career to create successful customers, not as a job, but as a life style. Public recognition had to be the consequence of a productive work performed with mastery in a systematic and profound way. In the words of my respected fellow Ulises Pabón, we had to make our way under the radar screen.

Today, dear readers, customers and friends, with humbleness but also with pride, we claim that we have made it. Thanks to hundreds of customers, organizational leaders inPuerto Ricoand abroad that have given us the opportunity to put into practice our theories, models and designs, we became an inner part of their respective journeys of change. Real organizations have become our laboratories for experimenting with non-conventional ways of developing competitive companies.  Today we celebrate being the prime team dedicated to the transformation of businesses and organizations in general.

Our mentor of mentors Dr. Manuel Angel (Coco) Morales worked since the beginning to create a core team that became an arena for assessing and preparing successors for the different critical roles of QBS. In time, a rigorous work culture developed, in which people did not need worry about their positions, but rather concentrated fully on their work. Today, I embrace the formal leadership of QBS’ next life stage with total confidence, faith and passion, for I rely on a special group of people that are capable of achieving the impossible.

We share with you some of the secrets for accomplishing a virtuous succession process that leads to a lasting high performance organization, those are the following:

We initiate this new organizational life cycle at a peak of our performance and full of enthusiasm. The way to the future is paved with the flavor of growth within the context of changes that can assure we continue to be the number one player in the market. More than ever, our passion is with our customers and our country. Three priorities will be guiding our decisions and actions: innovation of offerings to our customers, integration of the dream team and growth of the business.
